Lawn Mowing Tips:
Practising good lawn maintenance throughout the year can benefit it by not having to water it as frequently in those hot summer months.
- Always make sure the blades of your mower are sharp and can clean cut about 2 - 2.5 inches.
- If your lawn gets away from you and gets too long, try not to mow it all at once. Mowing it gradually in several cuttings is far less stressful for your lawn. At most, mow a third of the length of the grass.
- It is always preferable to mow your lawn while dry. This avoids the clogging of grass in the mower, bogging the mower, leaving clumps of grass on lawn and even spreading insects and grass diseases.
- Fertilising your lawn is best done in the spring. Heat and drought can make it more vulnerable. It is best to fertilise just before, or during the rain, or at least make sure you water your lawn properly after application.
- A well fertilised lawn keeps the weeds at bay from the actively growing grass.
- Try not to cut your lawn too short. Scalping only leads to shallow root systems and a thin lawn.
- If your region is experiencing a drought or extreme heat, moisture can be lost in the grass through the cut tips. If there are no water restrictions, then your lawn would love a good watering early in the morning, allowing it to evaporate during the day.
- The wheels of your mower and other vehicles can add to the stress on the grass at these times.
